OUTDOOR SPACES
Our community will be built around our organic garden and will have many communal spaces for gatherings. As a study from the University of Minnesota observed, the environment can facilitate or discourage interactions among people. We want our veterans and staff to always have a comfortable and serene place to sit down and talk with one another. Even at home, our veterans will have almost as much square footage on their exterior patios as they do inside, and these spaces will include their own hanging gardens. And wait until you see our lap pools!
LIGHT & BRIGHT
Studies show that, “Rooms with bright light, both natural and artificial, can improve health outcomes such as depression, agitation, and sleep.” Our models employ open concept floor plans and utilize large windows for natural light. Light therapy will also be available to help veterans maintain good spirits and combat depression. Finally, veterans will keep their environment clean because evidence shows that cleanliness influences motivation and behavior, and our veterans will be creating a lighter and brighter future for themselves. SYMBIOTIC LIVING
Research from UMN indicates that, “Environments can increase or reduce our stress, which in turn impacts our bodies. What you are seeing, hearing, and experiencing at any moment is changing not only your mood, but how your nervous, endocrine, and immune systems are working.” A pleasing environment can reverse feelings of anxiety, sadness, and helplessness. Our community will be build upon cooperation, where veterans one another improve their lives as they make sure their community culture and environment are well cared for.

BUILDING WITH THE FUTURE IN MIND
EV-OL is creating an environment where veterans are stewards of the planet. Each EV-OL home is designed to be constructed out of two recycled shipping containers, providing for an inexpensive and eco-friendly building option. Furthermore, we will employ solar power and are exploring all sustainable products, like bamboo, cork, and reclaimed woods. At EV-OL we are making a commitment to sustainability as part of our “think globally and act locally” approach. Veterans will create practices that they will take back out into the world, ensuring a brighter future for future generations.

We realize that many of our veterans may have limitations, so we have designed every bottom floor unit to be 100% ADA compliant.
